  • Cateline : my best friend, confidante. She keeps bees for leisure, but has started selling her wares in an attempt to gain a bit more independence.
  • Vauquelin : the apothecary owner. He provides me with the herbs and other materials I require without asking too many questions. He knows what I'm up to, he must, but he's never used it against me.
  • Rolant : my lover. He is a doctor, and has always insisted my interest in medicine is endearing, but ultimately frivolous. I won't tell him what's I'm doing. At least, not yet...
  • Pestilence (immortal): he wears the Plague doctor's mask, but he does not heal.
  • Black Lesions: they radiate out from my eyes and up from my left hand -- the one Pestilence held.

I wanted to ask Cateline for help. I was supposed to visit her bedside, but when I tried to leave the library the sun burned me skin, causing boils as bad as those of my patients. I was scared. I drew the curtains and hid in the library until dark, and I wore my uniform out, just in case the moon burned as well.
I met Rolant at our usual meeting place: a local inn known for its discretion. He started when I opened the door -- he's never seen me dressed as a doctor. The words spilled out all at once. My work in medicine. The creature Pestilence (I found I was now thinking of him as a creature, not a man). The lesions. The burning sun. My incredible hunger.
He was so kind. He told me he knew a house on the outskirts of town that would happy to house me discretely in exchange for my medical services. A house for unwed mothers.
He ushered me to his carriage, and drove me to the Manor. The house was so beautiful, I felt vulgar in his presence. I tried to kiss him goodbye, but he shrunk away from me. I suppose I can't blame him.
